All about the Theory Test!
Every learner driver has to pass their theory test before booking a practical test. The local theory centres are in Huddersfield, Bradford and Leeds.
The theory test has two parts, the multiple choice and the hazard perception test. You must pass both parts to pass the theory test, then you may apply for your practical test.
The multiple choice test uses a touch screen computer and you will be given instructions on how the test works and the chance to do a practice session. You will see a question on the screen and have to choose the correct answer to it. There is also a case study on which five questions are asked. It's a bit like a short story and is designed to see if you can show understanding of driving matters. To pass the test you have to score at least 43 out of 50. After the multiple choice sections you can have a break for up to three minutes and you then go on to the hazard perception test.
The hazard perception test will be explained to you by a short video tutorial. You will be shown a series of 14 video clips of every day road scenes. In each clip you will see at least one developing hazard and will have to identifiy the developing hazard as soon as possible by clicking the mouse button. The earlier you identify it, the more points you score. One clip will have 2 developing hazards. The best way to priactise for this is by using a DVD, such as Driving Test Success - (available from me free of charge). To pass the hazard perception test you must score at least 44 out of 75.
At the end of the test you may leave the examination room and will be given your result by the test centre staff.
How to prepare for the theory test
It is recommended to use a CD / DVD to practise the multiple choice and hazard perception parts of the theory test. There are DVD's available from the DSA which will help you prepare. Another publication which is highly recommended is Driving Test Success which many of my pupils have used in the past. This includes the multiple choice and hazard perception components, as well videos of an actual driving test. It is also very important to thoroughly study the Highway Code before attempting your theory or practical test.
